Teaching Areas and Research Interests:
Professor Sandoval received his Ph.D. in History, with an emphasis in
United States History (first field) and Latin American History (second
field). His specialty is in the history of the Chicana/o people and other
communities of color in the U.S., particularly the twentieth century.His research and teaching interests are in the broad fields of Chicana/o
and Latina/o histories, 20th century U.S. history, Ethnic and Cultural
Studies, and popular culture and media studies. He teaches classes
ranging the topics of Chicana/o Studies, the Vietnam War Era, images of
people of color in popular media, Social Movements of communities of
color, and the history of Rock and Roll.
Professional and Community Interests:
Professor Sandoval has been actively involved in the issues surrounding
educational access, especially for underrepresented and working class
communities. He is dedicated to improving the networks between K-12 and
the California State University system as well as enhancing the readiness
of our youth to successfully attend a college or university.Professionally, he is involved in efforts to both preserve the history of
the Chicana/o experience and integrate it into the curricula of our
schools. Currently, he serves as a Project Historian for the Oakland
Museum (Oakland, CA), collecting Chicana and Chicano oral narratives
for their exhibit "Vietnam in California," forthcoming in 2004.
