For the Campus Colloquium, Recommendations, and Action Plan presentation, the class divided in to Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior panels and presented their information based on the following questions:
FRESHMEN - THE TRANSITION FROM HIGH SCHOOL TO COLLEGE:
1. We recently hosted a College Day at CSUMB for high school seniors from Alisal and Gonzales. What did you learn from them about the challenges first generation students face in trying to get to college?
2. Tracking is a form of social control. Did the tracking system affect the CSUMB students you interviewed too?
3. How did your interviewees get to CSUMB? What or who was responsible? Who helped them?
4. Are the students getting support from people of programs in their first year here? What do they say?
5. Are these first generation freshmen affected by gender roles and expectations? Do they internalize these roles?
6. Does the ethnic or racial composition of the campus make a difference to the success of first generation freshmen at CSUMB? What do the students you interviewed say?
SOPHOMORES - CAMPUS SUPPORT FOR RETENTION
1. You interviewed students in their second year here. What did the students identify as the biggest challenges and problems to staying at CSUMB?
2. Do they get support from programs or individuals here? Is it enough support, or the right support?
3. How do these first generation sophomores manage financially?
4. What role do jobs on campus play in retaining first generation students? What kinds of jobs do they hold on campus and what do they say about them?
5. Has college changed the way first generation sophomores relate to family, friends, or community? Has going to college changed the way their family, friends, or community relate to them?
JUNIORS - TRANSFORMATIONS
1. The students you interviewed were interviewed two years ago. How have they changed?
2. After being here for three years, do first generation juniors feel more disconnected from their families, their communities, or their cultures?
3. Would you describe the transformations students experience as buying into upward mobility and assimilation? Or is there something else going on?
4. Was there a difference between the way male and female students relate to family and community?
5. What changes in student support services did these students experience over the past two years?
6. Did the first generation juniors have the same life goals now as they did two years ago?
7. What would you like to see happening for the first generation college students at CSUMB before you leave? What changes need to be made? What legacy would you like to leave?
