In the spring of 2000,
HCOM 350S students came together to continue the study of first
generation college students through oral history. This time, the
study was specifically concentrated on freshmen, sophomores, and
juniors who had participated in the FOCUS Summer Bridge program
before their first semester at California State University, Monterey
Bay. Ten interviewees from the HCOM 314S project in 1998 were
also re-interviewed regarding their own transformation and the
transformation of CSUMB in the past two years.
Not only did students record life histories but they hosted a College Day on April 5 to connect with local high school seniors who will soon be first generation college students. HCOM 350S students analyzed their data and produced a panel presentation of their findings regarding first generation college students CSUMB on May 11.
We have grouped our research and findings by college freshmen, sophomores, and juniors, as they each reflect a different stage of the first generation college experience. You are also welcome to explore our course syllabus and the interview questions we generated in class.
