Spring 1998

Students of California State University Monterey Bay designed and conducted life history interviews with university, high school, and middle school students from our campus and the surrounding communities. These students are, or will be, first in their families to go to college. Service Learning was part of our class experience. We tutored and developed outreach in nearby public schools, working with Upward Bound, Educational Talent Search, and AVID. These pages synthesize our findings about the experience of first-generation college students. This synthesis was researched and written collaboratively, in teams. It was published in the CSUMB newspaper, The Otter Realm, and was presented to a public audience in May, 1998. This page may be read as one connected piece, or as separate topics. Links are provided to other course materials - including the course syllabus, interview questions, bibliography.
