DEPTH CONCENTRATIONS*

HCOM offers 10 interdisciplinary Depth Concentrations. Depth Concentrations will appear on the student's academic transcript, alongside the title of the Major:

The Depth Concentration is designed to provide students the opportunity for deeper exposure to an interdisciplinary area of the Humanities, in relation to their intellectual and professional goals and interests. The Depth Concentration is an ideal way to prepare for and support the Senior Capstone project, as it offers students learning experiences that integrate MLOs.

Currently, the Institute sponsors ten concentrations:

  1. Practical and Professional Ethics
  2. American Multicultural Studies
  3. Women's Studies
  4. Literary and Cultural Studies
  5. Narrative, History, and Memory
  6. Journalism, Communication, and Media Studies
  7. Creative Writing and Social Action
  8. Pre-Law
  9. Chicana/o - Latina/o Studies
  10. Single Subject in English Waiver

The Depth Concentration may be fulfilled through three learning experiences designated for a particular concentration. If a learning experience is taken for an MLO assessment, it cannot also count for Depth Concentration. Prerequisites to each Concentration are listed. Students are encouraged to define their Depth Concentration in HCOM 300-Major ProSeminar, and to plan their Individual Learning Plans in accord with the Concentration prerequisites. Most students will focus on the Depth Concentration in the second year of the major. Questions regarding a specific Depth Concentration should be addressed to the faculty committee as listed.

In unusual circumstances, students may petition to the Independent Assessment Committee to include in the Depth Concentration no more than one learning experience from another Major. Modifications can be proposed only within the published concentration list.

* or Emphasis; pending approval of term Depth Concentration.
