DEPTH CONCENTRATIONS
Summary of Requirements for the HCOM
Single Subject Waiver in English at CSU Monterey Bay
The following summary Single Subject Waiver in English at CSU Monterey
Bay depicts the Waiver/Concentration requirements, electives, and credit
given.
In order to complete this Concentration successfully and expediently
at CSUMB, the students must take the following 15 courses (4 credits
each) for a total of 60 Credits. This is a career track concentration
for students who want to be secondary (7th-12th grade) English teachers.
Upon the successful completion of this Waiver program, students will
be waived from the Praxis Test and the SSAT Test, two tests required
before acceptance into a Teacher Credential Program. The Teacher Credential
in a Single Subject is a fifth year program. Students with a Waiver
will be eligible to apply to this fifth year program.
HCOM 475 Senior Capstone (4 Credits)
- Students produce a senior project related to an HCOM issue. They
integrate a number of major learning objectives, and they participant
in a campus wide capstone festival.
HCOM 300 Pro Seminar (4 Credits)
- Students are introduced to interdisciplinary study. With one-to-one
advising help, they develop detailed learning plans to guide them
throughout their careers at CSUMB
HCOM 301 Ways of Knowing (4 Credits)
- Students study epistemology. They investigate, evaluate, and apply
diverse ways of knowing in various disciplines, periods of time, and
locations.
HCOM 312 Cooperative Argument: Theory and Practice (4 Credits)
- Students become familiar with and practice speaking and writing
in various argumentation paradigms.
HCOM 317S Advanced Composition--Service Learning (4 Credits)
- Students learn and practice writing conventions, contemporary composition
theories, and major forms of written expression. They also participate
in an internship field experience in writing classrooms in the local
high schools. Students also become familiar with and analyze the pedagogies
necessary to best incorporate the technological advances designed
for the composition classroom.
HCOM 320 Structure of English (4 Credits)
- Students study the diverse linguistic attributes of the English
language inclusive of the deep structures of grammar and acquisition
theories.
HCOM 327 Survey of American Literature (4 Credits)
- Students analyze American literature(s) through different historical
periods, genres, and cultural movements. Students gain cross-cultural
knowledge of American Literary history, and introduction to literary
theory, and development of literary analysis skills.
HCOM 338 Multicultural Adolescent Literature (4 Credits)
- Students become familiar with the literature pertinent to adolescents
(ages 12-18) as well as with theory and pedagogies important to the
delivery of meaningful readings of texts rich in diverse class, gender,
and racial issues.
HCOM 421 Social History of the English Language (4 Credits)
- Students survey historically the social and political aspects of
language standardization, pidginism, and bilingualism in contexts
of imperialism and post-colonialism.
HCOM 427 Survey of British Literature (4 Credits)
- Students examine representative works from different British periods
of literature as well as texts that depict the diverse cultures-Black
British literatures, Irish literatures, and postcolonial British literatures-that
constitute what we know as British literature.
HCOM 437 Shakespeare and Postcolonial Interpretations (4 Credits)
- Students examine Shakespeare's plays from classical, modern, postmodern,
and postcolonial perspectives. This course covers Shakespeare's tragedies,
comedies, history plays, and romances. The course always requires
that students participate in a research analysis project.
HCOM 356 Multicultural History in New Media (4 Credits)
- Explores the complex experiences of African Americans, Asian Americans,
Chicano/as, European Americans, and Native Americans in U.S. history.
Combines the use of traditional written sources, such as autobiographies,
with new media technologies, such as CD-Rom, the Internet, and multimedia
presentations. Requires basic computer experience. STUDENTS UNABLE
TO TAKE THIS COURSE MAY SUBSTITUTE HCOM 353: CALIFORNIA AT THE CROSSROADS.
HCOM 403 Ethical Issues in the Professions (4 Credits)
- Through exploration and application of diverse moral frameworks,
students acquire knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to ethically
resolve complex moral issues associated with a variety of professions.

- Should a student not be able to take HCOM 403 to satisfy MLO 3 (Relational
Communication), he/she could take one of the following courses to
