DEPTH CONCENTRATIONS

7) CREATIVE WRITING AND SOCIAL ACTION CONCENTRATION

The Creative Writing and Social Action Concentration offers students the opportunity to pursue in-depth studies in creative writing and social action. The Concentration teaches writing as representation, the bricks of this multicultural house we're building. It braids together multiple threads:

Through this concentration, students have the opportunity to learn:

  • Depth and complexity in creative writing.
  • Representation: the opportunity for students to witness their lives and the lives of their communities, claiming voice and space in poems and stories and narratives.
  • Skill in breaking silences and writing for social action.
  • Interdisciplinarity with visual art.
  • Interdisciplinarity with humanities and/or social sciences. e.g. writing and culture/heritage; writing and environment; writing and health/human services.
  • Technology and writing: E-Zines, digital story-telling.
  • Active participation in the community.
