Major ProSeminar (HCOM 300); MLO 2 Research Skills

Prior to formal admission to the Human Communication major, students must successfully complete the Major ProSeminar. Successful assessment of Major ProSeminar also includes MLO 2, Research Skills.

To prepare for entry into the HCOM ProSeminar, students are required to complete the EngCom ULR; they are also advised to complete the ULRs in Ethics, Literature and Popular Culture, U.S. Histories, Creative and Artistic Expression, and Culture and Equity. Transfer students entering the major should have completed equivalent General Education (lower division) courses in most of these areas at their former institutions.

The Major ProSeminar is designed to:

  • Help students acquire and develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to fulfill the Major Learning Outcomes.
  • Acquaint students with an understanding of disciplinary and interdisciplinary assumptions and methods that shape this integrated Humanities major.
  • Enable students to take charge of their own learning through the development of an Individual Learning Plan and selection of a Concentration. Once approved by the Concentration Advisor, the Learning Plan becomes the student's guide for completion of the Bachelor's Degree in Human Communication.
  • Help students maintain and develop learning communities for sustained mentoring and support.
  • Prepare students to explore continuing education, professional opportunities, and specific career paths.

In Major ProSeminar, students begin defining their Depth Concentration and Senior Capstone projects. The lead faculty in the student's Depth Concentration becomes the major advisor from ProSeminar to graduation.
