THE MAJOR

The Major in Human Communication offers a comprehensive, interdisciplinary Humanities and Liberal Arts education for the 21st century. The Major integrates the fields of:

English - Philosophy - American Literature - Rhetoric and Composition - Comparative Literature - Speech & Communication - Creative Writing - Journalism - History

with contemporary fields of:

Chicana/o-Latina/o Studies - African American Studies - Asian American Studies - Native American Studies - EuroAmerican Studies - American Studies - Gender and Women's Studies - Cultural Studies - Communication Studies - Media Studies - Social Action Art

Whereas these fields are usually offered as separate majors in other universities, CSUMB offers a combined, interdisciplinary program.

The B.A. in Human Communication offers Depth Concentrations in:

  • Practical and Professional Ethics
  • American Multicultural Studies
  • Chicana/o - Latina/o Studies
  • Literary and Cultural Studies
  • Journalism and Media Studies
  • Creative Writing and Social Action
  • Narrative, History, and Memory

THE MINOR

The Minor in Human Communication complements a student's major by accentuating fundamental communication, cross-cultural competency, and reasoning skills.

To qualify for a Minor, students will need to fulfill HCOM 301: Ways of Knowing (MLO 4) and 3 other HCOM MLOs of choice.
